| Pasco Commissioners Set Tentative Tax Rate; Hearings Begin Sept. 8 County commissioners on Tuesday set a tentative tax rate of $5.43 per $1,000 of property valuation for the upcoming 2008-09 fiscal year – the same rate homeowners paid this year. Property owners will, however, save an estimated $115 each in the coming year, however, thanks to statewide property tax reform, a slow economy and a trimmed down budget of $980 million. Homeowners in August will receive notices from the property appraiser showing their estimated taxes for the coming year. Those in the county's fire and rescue taxing district also must pay 99.6 cents per $1,000 as well as school taxes, water district and mosquito control district fees and other assessments. Those in municipalities pay local taxes. more info |
| Nurse At Zephyrhills Prison Faces Drug Charges A nurse at the Zephyrhills Correctional Institution was arrested early this morning on charges of armed trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia, Tampa police say. Oberdella Melvin, 46, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. A search warrant was executed at her home, 1105 Facet View Way in Valrico. more info |

| 5-Month Drug Probe Nets Dozens Of Arrests A five-month drug investigation targeting two drug-trafficking groups and four distribution cells throughout the state has culminated with nearly two dozen arrests this morning, officials said. Tampa and Plant City police, federal authorities and the sheriff's offices in Hillsborough, Pasco and Lee counties cooperated in the investigation. Forty-one people have been arrested. more info |
| 2 Charged In Shooting Death Of Port Richey Man Pasco County Sheriff's Office detectives arrested two suspects in the shooting death of Pedro Perez, who was shot and killed Sunday at his residence, 6735 El Camino Paloma St., Port Richey. Antonio Arriaga, 22, of Hudson and Franklin Henry, 23, of New Port Richey were arrested Tuesday night and charged with first-degree murder. more info |
